Domain Registration can be described simply as buying a URL (website address). Because of the organisation of different level domains (.com vs .com.au for example), not all domains cost the same, or are as easy to obtain. Below is a brief description on how to get the two most popular domain types, .com and .com.au.

.com.au domains are managed by auDA, the au Domain Authority. auDA has put certain policies in place regarding the registration of au domains that restrict their registration t0 organisations that can prove that they are eligible to own a given domain. For example, when we registered runwebdesign.com.au, we had to provide proof (in our case an A.C.N.) that we had legal ownership of that name, and therefore a right to register a domain with that name, or a derivative of it.

.com domains are the cheapest domains to register, and anyone can get hold of them, anywhere in the world, for any purpose. For this reason it can be harder to get hold of what you want, but as a result, they tend to carry more of an international flavour. We suggest registering a .com domain to businesses whose website will have an international audience, or who are ineligible for a .com.au domain (see above).
